Growing

SPL has developed state-of- the-art glasshouses that utilise the latest innovations.

Our glasshouses

The business has also invested significantly in automation, efficient systems, and packhouses, leading to the operation being the lowest-cost producer of premium capsicums in New Zealand.

Inside the glasshouses, skilled growers monitor the capsicums throughout the day. A computer system constantly adjusts the angles of vents, which have been carefully engineered to maximise the amount of light and airflow.

As a result of grower expertise and technology, the operation yields around 30kg of capsicums per square metre from plants that grow up to four metres in height.

Quality and Compliance

SPL aligns closely with all NZ regulatory standards for food safety, health and safety, and environmental management. SPL holds Global GAP (Good Agricultural Practices)
and GRASP (Global Gap Risk Assessment on Social Practice), which support the operation's transparency and compliance with local laws, management systems, and social, labour, and environmental standards.
The operation is audited independently by accredited certification bodies to ensure
our produce follows guidelines when grown, harvested, and packaged. We do this so that
our products are always at their very best and consumers can have confidence in the quality of the produce.

Sustainability

SPL operates at the highest environmentally friendly levels in the production of our capsicums, disposal and recyclability of waste, and prevention of pollution.

Glasshouse growing is one of the most sustainable ways to produce fresh fruit and vegetables year-round. SPL uses glasshouses to control temperature, humidity, and growing medium, resulting in higher yields using approximately 5% of the water that would be required to grow the same amount of product in a traditional outdoor environment.

Sustainability at SPL:

Energy screens installed to enhance energy efficiency by 40%.
CO2 is used to increase crop yield by up to 15%.
Packaging is made from recycled food-grade cardboard.
Coco peat growing media
is recycled and used by the landscape industry at the end of the season.
The closed nutrient loop with our irrigation allows all our irrigation water to be treated and reused, reducing the quantity left to be applied to local farmland.
Capsicums are grown using non- genetically modified seed and are cultivated using biological controls and environmentally aware practices
